By Dr. R Sudarshan
Once a poor man, ravished by famine, prayed for a square meal in faraway Japan, and the Goddess of harvest and prosperity, 'Inari Okami' brought this plant from heaven and handed it over to him. The chestnuts he grew, made him rich.
Whatever be the legend, the Pachira Chestnut or Malabar chestnut, or French Peanut is an immensely beautiful plant. In the raging heat of summer this week, the 4-year-old has bared its chest and sprung out a lone flower. The flower is so popular on the farm among insects that it looks like those who can fly have all been landing on its filaments.
