GUEST CHEF WORKSHOP - 4

By Dr. R Sudarshan

PUMPKIN TENDER SHOOT CURRY (ಕುಂಬಳ ಕುಡಿ ಪಲ್ಯ)

5 PM on Saturday, 30 April 2022, Venue: Farmer's House

The pumpkin plant is a phyto capitalist. It aggressively goes about collecting nutrition from the soil, produces large leaves to ingest sunlight, climbs whatever prop it finds, spreads out widely on the farm floor, gives out tender tendril shoots that race in all directions, and finally bears fruits that are as large as dinosaur eggs. The plant is a great nutrient grabber from the soil and an impressive nutrition investor in its leaves, shoots, and fruits.

Neena Kaveriappa from Coorg (Kodagu) has spent 3 decades in Mysore. With a home science education and an embedded cultural diversity of Kodagu and Mysore in her, she combines the culinary skills of different lifestyles and makes delicacies out of what's very nutritious, but is not the mainstream food of many. This week, pumpkin plants are shooting out all over the Padma Farms. And Neena Kaveriappa is able to take time off for the community.

On Saturday evening, Neena will show us how to make pumpkin tendril shoot curry. In Nepal, it is 'Farsi ko munta'. In Bengal, it is 'Kumro danta charchari'. In Thailand, it is just 'pumpkin shoot stir fry'. In Mysore now - ಕುಂಬಳ ಕುಡಿ ಪಲ್ಯ.

Each registrant at the Workshop will get to eat the pumpkin tender shoot curry with a pair of organic rotis. The material cost fee of Rs 200/- per person applies.

COMMUNITY DIALOGUE - 1

By Dr. R Sudarshan EATING CLEAN: COMMUNITY DIALOGUE - 1;  Featured Speaker - Sindhu Ramachandra;  Friday, 15 July 2022 at 5:30 PM E ating clean is a lifestyle fundamental, easily ignored and abused in the fast lane of tongue temptations. And the long convoluted tube that we call 'gut' is often turned into a gutter that is forced to process what it is not meant for - synthetic food, herbicides, pesticides, and life-threatening substances. Sindhu is a biochemist with work experience from IISc. She pursues data science and AI in the context of biochemistry. An ardent believer in organic farming, she cares for clean foods. And she knows how unclean foods can turn your life upside down. Community Dialogues at the Farmer's House are an engagement with reason to restore the dignity of life. Come, listen, interact and benefit. Attendance is FREE. Register with Gagan at 97421 62956. * * * Farmer's House, Silverfish Books, Kutz Bowl and the Farmer's Market, # 1A, 13th Cross,...

A CURATOR'S AMARYLLIS

By Dr. R Sudarshan T he maiden book of the Silverfish Books curator ( https://www.amazon.in/Beauty-Queen-Pathway-Pageantry-Sudarshan/dp/9390924103 ) was published by Amaryllis in August 2021. To commemorate the day of publication, we planted Amaryllis at our farm. Some 8 months later, the Amaryllis has begun to bloom at the farm, coinciding with our curator's signing an agreement with Trinidad and Tobago in the wider Caribbean to provide them her mentorship in pageantry, based on her book. Coincidences are as impossible to explain as the spirit of symbolism is. Nonetheless, the book is now a milestone in the life avenue of Silverfish and the Amaryllis flower now is a milestone at the farm that's an integral part of our bookstore. THE CURIOUS CASE OF CULANTRO

By Dr R Sudarshan Y es. Culantro and not Cilantro. The long distance cousin of coriander that came from Mexico in the middle centuries to Europe and landed in India approximately some 300 to 400 years ago along with its Mediterranean cousin Cilantro, the coriander. Culantro is relatively rare but so much more stronger than coriander that once you are used to this, coriander recedes to a second choice. A couple of Culantro plants have been taken to the farm and are growing impressively well. Probably, there will be lots of seeds in a few weeks, so that we could propagate and feature the leaves in the weekly market too. And one plant of Culantro has prospered well in a pot at the store too.  For any relevant query,  message 81051 12990. * * * Padma Farms, Farmer's House, # 1A - 13th Cross, Kalidasa Road, VV Mohalla, Mysore.
