The PROMISE

A family of young people gathers for their mother's funeral. Like every next generation that's eager to disengage from the past with the death of an old one, they detest all commitments and try to move on. That includes a promise made to a woman who served their mother all her life.

The repercussions of a broken promise play out into the center stage of their presence in the decades that unfold. Conflicts of human nature unravel layer by layer. Resulting parade of life witnesses an erosion of values, long-term futility of short-term material gains, and the way the mind re-assesses itself with age.

Delicately portrayed and masterfully crafted, Damon Galgut got BOOKER PRIZE for this novel in 2021.
