84th Organic Farmers' Market

By Dr. R Sudarshan

KADAKNATH EGGS - A JOURNEY FROM MADIKERI TO MYSURU

That's a melanin-loaded beautiful black hen of Jhabua (Madhya Pradesh) nativity, under a threat of extinction because it hardly breeds in the new environments. And its eggs are said to be a little more proteinaceous and nutritive than those of other hens.

Jacinth Aboobacker has raised KADAKNATH hens in the organic free-range around her house in distant Madikeri. On her weekly visits to Mysore, she wishes to bring KADAKNATH eggs carefully from there and sell them at our weekly Sunday market, beginning this week.

We have told Jacinth that the market is merciless and it just thrives on what people want and not how much passionate the farmer is and from what distance or how carefully you raise the produce and bring it. But Jacinth is focused, like the half a dozen organic farmers that use our platform. Hope her enthusiasm sustains for long. Hope the community finds her efforts useful.

MUSHROOM ADDITION

Perhaps Mr. Shekhar, one of our valued members of the market, is the only organic farmer on the planet who grows in his tiny backyard a wee bit in excess of what his family can consume, and brings that surplus hundred grams, mixed with a smile, to the Sunday market to sell.

But now, he has doubled his farming area by including an attic where he grows oyster mushrooms.

And on coming Sunday at the 84th week of the organic market at 9 AM, you will find a few packets of these mushrooms in the middle of an ocean of vegetables and fruits that we bring.

Weekend market, strengthened by passion.

COMMUNITY DIALOGUE - 1

By Dr. R Sudarshan EATING CLEAN: COMMUNITY DIALOGUE - 1;  Featured Speaker - Sindhu Ramachandra;  Friday, 15 July 2022 at 5:30 PM E ating clean is a lifestyle fundamental, easily ignored and abused in the fast lane of tongue temptations. And the long convoluted tube that we call 'gut' is often turned into a gutter that is forced to process what it is not meant for - synthetic food, herbicides, pesticides, and life-threatening substances. Sindhu is a biochemist with work experience from IISc. She pursues data science and AI in the context of biochemistry. An ardent believer in organic farming, she cares for clean foods. And she knows how unclean foods can turn your life upside down. Community Dialogues at the Farmer's House are an engagement with reason to restore the dignity of life. Come, listen, interact and benefit. Attendance is FREE. Register with Gagan at 97421 62956. * * * Farmer's House, Silverfish Books, Kutz Bowl and the Farmer's Market, # 1A, 13th Cross,...

A CURATOR'S AMARYLLIS

By Dr. R Sudarshan T he maiden book of the Silverfish Books curator ( https://www.amazon.in/Beauty-Queen-Pathway-Pageantry-Sudarshan/dp/9390924103 ) was published by Amaryllis in August 2021. To commemorate the day of publication, we planted Amaryllis at our farm. Some 8 months later, the Amaryllis has begun to bloom at the farm, coinciding with our curator's signing an agreement with Trinidad and Tobago in the wider Caribbean to provide them her mentorship in pageantry, based on her book. Coincidences are as impossible to explain as the spirit of symbolism is. Nonetheless, the book is now a milestone in the life avenue of Silverfish and the Amaryllis flower now is a milestone at the farm that's an integral part of our bookstore. THE CURIOUS CASE OF CULANTRO

By Dr R Sudarshan Y es. Culantro and not Cilantro. The long distance cousin of coriander that came from Mexico in the middle centuries to Europe and landed in India approximately some 300 to 400 years ago along with its Mediterranean cousin Cilantro, the coriander. Culantro is relatively rare but so much more stronger than coriander that once you are used to this, coriander recedes to a second choice. A couple of Culantro plants have been taken to the farm and are growing impressively well. Probably, there will be lots of seeds in a few weeks, so that we could propagate and feature the leaves in the weekly market too. And one plant of Culantro has prospered well in a pot at the store too.  For any relevant query,  message 81051 12990. * * * Padma Farms, Farmer's House, # 1A - 13th Cross, Kalidasa Road, VV Mohalla, Mysore.
