85th Organic Farmers' Market

By Dr. R Sudarshan

The week that passed was washed clean by incessant rains. Not only that the leafy vegetables drowned in flooded soil, the fruits and leaves withered and began to decompose. An army of metallic green scarab beetles took chance and invaded the farm brutally but beautifully.

We guarded the jack in the cleft for months. When it ripened yesterday, we immediately announced the banquet and the farmhands covered it with a thick sheet, to protect it from the night riders till the guests arrived. And over 10 guests were assured of driving in.

But this morning, when the farmhands went to lay the table for the banquet, they discovered that the jackfruit has been hacked and eaten by the real custodians of nature, overnight. Bees and insects are now swarming the broken fruit and competing with pecking birds. The shield of a sheet that we spread, is torn to pieces. On the tree, there are tell-tale signs of a conflict between the claimants.

Sorry folks. The covenant of banquet had an inbuilt exit clause that we couldn't avoid.

Scarab beetles are good friends of organic farming. They scavenge, help decomposition, recycling, and hence the farm's resilience.

We announce the  85th week of the organic market with a high hope that the organic nature of the farm is re-asserting itself. And the farm is reorganizing thoroughly, in order to produce much more delightful wild.

9 AM on Sunday. Your date with nature that's called the market.

COMMUNITY DIALOGUE - 1

By Dr. R Sudarshan EATING CLEAN: COMMUNITY DIALOGUE - 1;  Featured Speaker - Sindhu Ramachandra;  Friday, 15 July 2022 at 5:30 PM E ating clean is a lifestyle fundamental, easily ignored and abused in the fast lane of tongue temptations. And the long convoluted tube that we call 'gut' is often turned into a gutter that is forced to process what it is not meant for - synthetic food, herbicides, pesticides, and life-threatening substances. Sindhu is a biochemist with work experience from IISc. She pursues data science and AI in the context of biochemistry. An ardent believer in organic farming, she cares for clean foods. And she knows how unclean foods can turn your life upside down. Community Dialogues at the Farmer's House are an engagement with reason to restore the dignity of life. Come, listen, interact and benefit. Attendance is FREE. Register with Gagan at 97421 62956. * * * Farmer's House, Silverfish Books, Kutz Bowl and the Farmer's Market, # 1A, 13th Cross,...

A CURATOR'S AMARYLLIS

By Dr. R Sudarshan T he maiden book of the Silverfish Books curator ( https://www.amazon.in/Beauty-Queen-Pathway-Pageantry-Sudarshan/dp/9390924103 ) was published by Amaryllis in August 2021. To commemorate the day of publication, we planted Amaryllis at our farm. Some 8 months later, the Amaryllis has begun to bloom at the farm, coinciding with our curator's signing an agreement with Trinidad and Tobago in the wider Caribbean to provide them her mentorship in pageantry, based on her book. Coincidences are as impossible to explain as the spirit of symbolism is. Nonetheless, the book is now a milestone in the life avenue of Silverfish and the Amaryllis flower now is a milestone at the farm that's an integral part of our bookstore. THE CURIOUS CASE OF CULANTRO

By Dr R Sudarshan Y es. Culantro and not Cilantro. The long distance cousin of coriander that came from Mexico in the middle centuries to Europe and landed in India approximately some 300 to 400 years ago along with its Mediterranean cousin Cilantro, the coriander. Culantro is relatively rare but so much more stronger than coriander that once you are used to this, coriander recedes to a second choice. A couple of Culantro plants have been taken to the farm and are growing impressively well. Probably, there will be lots of seeds in a few weeks, so that we could propagate and feature the leaves in the weekly market too. And one plant of Culantro has prospered well in a pot at the store too.  For any relevant query,  message 81051 12990. * * * Padma Farms, Farmer's House, # 1A - 13th Cross, Kalidasa Road, VV Mohalla, Mysore.
