THE SILVERFISH STONES at Padma Farms

The bookstore now has a flight of stairs to its organic farm. Those of you who have seen the Spanish Steps by Piazza Spagna in Rome will know how Keats was inspired by stones and how many youngsters still sit on the steps and imagine their individual worlds in their minds.

Silverfish imitates inspiration. Not so grand but nonetheless well intended. Not so historical but a humble present.

Hand-built by our inexperienced farmhands, who collected garbage and heaped broken stones from the city's sidewalk with help rendered by volunteers like Dr. Charan, the stairs are in part the personality of our diligently curated bookstore. 

Silverfish stones - to sit upon, reflect and read a book. In silence. In nature.

And a curious little boy visitor to the farm chopped and sliced it to feel the power of an axe. We then rediscovered a string of hollow chambers in the stem that we had long forgotten after the college days. The pith cavities are the multiple hearts of the papaya vascularity.
