By Dr. R Sudarshan
For those who lived in the middle of the last century in Mysore, he was their first and last Maharaja, who sat on the elephant that marched in Dasara. In 1971, with the 26th Amendment to the Constitution, all his privileges ended, but he didn't quickly descend from people's minds from royalty.
The Mysore Maharaja was a distinguished intellectual. He knew western symphony as much as he understood the Indian classical. He could speak at length on Vedanta as easily as he could articulate the philosophy of Spinoza. Life talked to him in beautiful metaphors. And no matter whether he was a king or a commoner in the eyes of the law, he held himself in a commendable scholarly dignity.
The biography of a king who lived among us in our city. And now, the shelf is honored.
