By Dr. R Sudarshan
In some four spots across the farm, we placed large earthen bowls and filled them with water for the birds to bathe, drink, and play in. Just to break the monotony of water, we placed a couple of Pistia, the water Rose plants.
Little did we realize that we had set up an uncontrolled and unpredictable system of life. Within 6 months, Pistia packed the pot. A whole range of insects invaded the spot. Spiders bred in the folds of water roses to prey on the crawlers. Frogs hopped in, hoping for a meal. Little snakes too shared the mischievous pleasure of a lurking opportunity.
We are yet to figure out who hunts whom in the labyrinth of life. We hear that unbelievable things do happen and some spiders may even hunt frogs.
Meanwhile our original target, the birds swoop in too. That's not for a drink of water, but for the incredible banquet, the bowls have come to offer.
